I have been very fortunately to have lived at least 9 lives in my career! Ā A pivot that I made in 2018 to start my career in product management is one that I will never regret. Ā What is product management you ask? Ā Well let me tell you while I perch on my PM soapbox! Ā Can you tell I love this?! Ā

Being a PM is basically acting as a CEO of a segment of the business that has a strong reliance on a technology product. Ā Well the technology product is nowadays. Back in the day in my 5th life I was a product manager that worked on creating tangible products – not digital products. Ā So back to the digital space – being a PM allows you to be the ultimate voice for the user that your product solves a problem for. Ā One of the first products I worked on was called Kroger Rush. Ā Adding some more formal explaination about Kroger Rush below but wanted to go into the problem we were solving and the user we wanted to solve it for. Ā We wanted to understand could we deliver convenience items to Kroger customers in 30 minutes or less. Ā We also thought it would be interesting to understand if we could deliver all the hot food items that Kroger sells – you know the subs, the sushi, the pizza, the Asian food bar. Ā Guess what we found out. Ā We could deliver in 30 mins or less. Ā Guess what we also found out. Ā Setting up a delivery operation in store and being open for the amount of hours we needed to be was very expensive. Ā But was it desirable – yes. Ā Was it feasible – yes. Ā Was it viable – ehh maybe at scale or handled by Instacart! Ā Ā

So I know I went off on a tangent but being a PM means that you have to create this thing to see if it solves this problem for this user. Ā It can also mean that you are working on a different thing that already has users but doesn’t quite work as well as you want it to. Ā

It is a fantastic path if you are really into solving problems. Ā I am always trying to solve something. Ā I can’t tell you how many times a day I say there has got to be a better way or process to do this – basically I am finding problems all the time. Ā Read more about Kroger Rush below!!Ā
