Listening to this first episode of Lenny’s Podcast may be why I am here! Julie Zhuo dives into writing and habitual writing to lead to break throughs and thought leadership. I love to write but I honestly do not make nearly enough time for it! Julie advocates to make the time so here I am. One thing I am super self aware of is my need to create a challenge for myself to lead to the habit. If I do not hold myself accountable (on a public forum like Medium) I will not show up.
Now in my everyday product practice the challenge of achieving an OKR or hitting that KPI, or even an increase in user behaviors holds me accountable. I KNOW deep deep down this is why I thrive in product management. In most areas you get a score card every day. Digging a bit deeper the need for this scorekeeping may have started at the beginning of my career — heck even the beginning of my education (solid B student over here) — when I walked into an office everyday and ran reports to see what the previous days sales equalled. When I walked away from that I found ways to score myself each day as an entrepreneur. And now as a digital product manager I often work on products where a user let’s me know, frequently, how my product is performing. In some cases that equates to dollars and in some it equates to views. But for me it always equates to accountability and pushes me to make sure everything I do adds value.
I digressed quite a bit from all the wonderfulness that Julie and Lenny hit on during the podcast — but I guess that is the beautiful thing about this challenge. I also have no idea where this will go but excited to be inspired to become a hibutaul writer that may bring some value each day!
