I am absolutely fascinated with onboarding flows. I worked on a product where the onboarding fed the consumer’s preferences and helped us give them a more personalized experience once into the main offering. It was far from perfect but it got the job done and we saw results.

Merci talks about the onboarding implemented when starting to use Slack. As an avid Slack user I honestly do not remember going through onboarding. But I know that I never doubted where to click to add my photo or how to update my preferences when getting into a new channel. I did attend a company wide — Slack Hack — where we were taugh tips and tricks that I am still using and also sharing.

The most interesting thing that Merci hits on is Slack’s strategy of Product Led Growth(aka PLG) to lead not only the sales of the product but also the use of the product. I am also fascinated by this. Atlassian is another good case study of how you can sign up, pay and start using the product without ever talking to a human. How powerful is a product where you can do all the jobs as a user without seeking out help from a friend! I am sure human to human connections are not going anywhere! And Slack is built to better facilitate these connections. So all around a really sound strategy and good learning for us all!
